Workshops for patients in PMMH-RI

In the “FAMILIAL HIPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA WITHOUT SECRETS” workshops organized by the Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital-Research Institute and the Heart for Cardiology Coalition, participated 150 people. 50 patients took part in preventive examinations.

– Let there be more such initiatives and we will be more and more effective in diagnosing and treating our most seriously ill patients – says prof. Maciej Banach, President of the PMMH, adding that familial hypercholesterolemia is a life-shortening disease, but we have the knowledge and tools to combat it. – There are 24 centers operating all over Poland, which implement a dedicated drug program. Therefore, if you have even the shadow of the suspicion that your relatives may suffer from familial hypercholesterolemia, do not be afraid to seek help in specialist centers.

Let us remind you that familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetically conditioned disease, causing accelerated atherosclerosis and the early occurrence of cardiovascular events. It develops asymptomatically. At the root of this disease lies a genetic defect that causes a significant increase in the level of “bad” LDL cholesterol. Consequently, high concentrations of the LDL-C fraction lead to premature atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke. Mortality from vascular and cardiac causes in young people between 20 and 39 affected by this disease is one hundred times higher than in the population.

– We know that there may be up to 170,000 undiagnosed patients in Poland – says Szymon Chrostowski from the Heart Coalition for Cardiology.- That is why every initiative promoting knowledge about it is so important.
